HASELT @ DIGIT Web 2016

HASELT @ DIGIT Web 2016

Our team was part of DIGIT (Design and Interactive Graphics in IT), an educational workshop for students in the field of design and programming.

Happening for the third time from 28.11. to 02.12.2016, the aim of DIGIT is students from all faculties to acquire real technical knowledge in the domain of graphic, application, interactive and any other design. This year's topic was Front-End Community Websites, where the students attended lectures dedicated mainly to front-end and a workshop where they were creating the solutions.

The event started with the presentation of our CTO, Bojan Veljanovski, talking about "Overview of front-end development today". In the presentation, Bojan gave general outline about what front-end development is and shared his experience gained through the years. Starting from the basic things the attendees need to know for making a website (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM, JSON, HTTP...), he explained the traditional and modern SPA (Single Page Application) approaches and added what techniques they need to implement during the workshop.

In the summary Bojan added few best-practices:

  1. Slice your apps in several cohesive modules
  2. Decide development approach per module, not per application
  3. Use SPA approach in these cases:
    1. highly interactive (reactive) web apps
    2. real-time web apps
    3. offline support for web apps
    4. hybrid mobile apps 4.Choose the simplest tool with which you can get the job done and do the simplest thing that could possibly work

Listen to feedback, improve and iterate continuously

Each day after the lectures the participants had workshops. There they were working hard on realizing their ideas, assisted by mentors.  Boban Radeski, Experienced Front-end Development Engineer and Aleksandar Jakimovski, Senior UX/UI Designer from our team were one of the mentors, helping the participants to clarify all the issues and problems they faced during the process of development and gave them valuable advices.

We believe that only with supporting each other, we can grow and improve ourselves and the community. Having this in mind, we are always willing to help local events and organizations, especially when students are the main focus.
